The Wedding Tree - September 13, 2011 by admin

The Wedding Tree There’s a little bit of magic in the air… There’s hope, and joy, and reflection…

Just like Christmas season, you feel the same magic, the same hope, joy, reflection and love in the air during a Wedding.

What could be more “forever”, what could hold the magic with the twinkling of a light, or the moment in time with pictures? What stands tall in the forest, forever sheltering? Steadfast, spreading it’s branches out protecting what lies underneath.

There’s something magical about Christmas Trees. There’s something magical about Weddings.

Aren’t they both the root of or the foundation of a new life for years? A tree starts as a seed, growing taller, stronger, holding up and supporting new branches, new life, new joy. Just like a marriage. Starting with two people. Growing stronger, holding on, holding up, supporting each other, as they too start a new life together.

THE WEDDING TREE PROJECT

I’ve always, always loved Christmas. There’s not going to be much to “remember me” by when I die, but if I had one thing, just that one thing I want family and friends to know and remember it’s to know “she loved Christmas”! And Oh those Christmas memories created for us by my own mom! All of the baking, the smell of cinnamon in the air, the cooking, the decorating, the tree, twinkling lights, the Christmas carols, shopping, wrapping, presents – anything and everything, I. Just. Love. It.! If it was up to me, we’d have the house decorated 9 months out of the year! (the other 3 months are too hot, and Christmas is supposed to be chilly weather – maybe with a few snow flurries thrown in!).

Grapevine Spiral Christmas TreeI also thoroughly enjoy making wreaths out of grapevine and garland! Many years ago I found a “spiral grapevine” at Michaels I believe – I no longer remember, but I’m pretty sure it was them. I figured, why not try and create a “Christmas Tree” out of this spiral. So I purchased several packages of the garland and through trial and error, created my very first “Christmas Tree”.

Yeah, I know, I get it – that’s one really SAD looking Christmas Tree! But hey, it really was my “first attempt”. This picture was from 1993, and yes, it really is the very first one I made. I don’t know or remember how it exactly happened, but one day while trying to come up with a wedding gift for friends of ours, I kept trying to figure out what to gift the couple. What could we do that was unique, different, and would last years! I knew we wanted to give cash, but I wanted to present the cash with a gift also. Somehow – I ended up seeing photos of this tree, and I wondered to myself, why can’t I just take something like this, decorate it using information about the wedding (colors, flowers, etc…). So there you have it – this poor pitiful looking tree to the right ended up being the “inspiration” behind my Wedding Trees!

Christmas Tree Chili PeppersThrough the years I’ve also made my trees as Christmas gifts for friends and family. The one you see to the left was made with “reds” – specifically Chili Peppers in 2001! This tree ended up being about 3 1/2 feet tall, and I believe I used close to 54 FEET of garland around it. I wish I had better pictures of it! My friend who received this has had the Chili Pepper tree on her porch – the last I knew!

When I first started making the Trees, the Grapevine was a lot thicker and actually had wire through it making it much sturdier as a base. To construct a tree, making it about 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 feet tall I used the following craft items:

*Grapevine Spiral, usually 9′ long
*Pine Garland, each strand is 9′ long – from 4-6 strands total
*1 50 to 100 strand of Mini Lights
*Dried Spanish Moss, Baby’s Breath, thin natural wood sticks
*Dried flowers in Wedding Colors
*A bag of large sized potpourri leaves/balls/pinecones, etc…
*Doves, birds, butterflies
*Anything specific to the wedding “theme” (If there is one)
*For weddings, I fold dollar bills (any denomination) and wire them to the tree
*For Christmas, I will use Christmas decorations & ribbons from craft supply stores
*Lots and lots of glue for the glue guns – I have 2 heating to make these

I’ve often thought about making the trees and then selling them; however, the time, expense and the shipping costs involved don’t really make this a “reality”. The total cost involved does vary, depending on (1) how many garland strands I use; (2) whether I have to order online in bulk for dried flowers + those shipping/tax costs to me; (3) the type of decorations – potpourri, charms (like I did for Philip & Tara’s Wedding Tree); (5) the amount of dollars I fold & wire to the tree; (6) Shipping is average about $45-$50 due to the size of the carton and the destination. So as you can see, there are a lot of different variables going into making the trees and the cost involved. Time-wise, it takes me anywhere from 40-70 hours to complete one. One of the things I do is create a tree, start decorating it, then leave the “first try” sitting out so I can walk around it, look at it for a few days or a week or so and decide if I’m happy with the final product. If not, I go back and add more items/decorations until I am happy with it!

Every Christmas tree I make, I make from the heart! Christmas is as much a part of me as anything else around me! As I said in the beginning, I absolutely love everything about Christmas (and yah, I do say “Merry Christmas”). Making these trees is never, EVER about the cost involved – else I wouldn’t be making them! Sometimes yes, I do worry that people won’t like them – that the recipients are not really “into” handmade things, or something like this. I usually wait on pins and needles, getting that “sick” feeling in the pit of my stomach until I hear something! I always just hope those given the tree remember all of the work and time involved – but really remember it was made for them by loving hands as a gift from the spirit of Christmas – Love!

Wedding Bells Tara and Philip Buch! - July 23, 2011 by admin

One of the things I haven’t done is told the world about the upcoming wedding between my middle son, Philip, and my Future Daughter-In-Law, Tara.

Thanksgiving 2009… Philip who never introduced any girlfriend(s) to me in the past, invited his step-dad and I down to North Carolina to meet Tara for the first time. I’m thinking… “oh dear, I’m nervous for sure, all of those MIL jokes out there”! Of course.. then we have the.. “I’m too fat, have nothing to wear, I am a smoker, etc…” all of those things go running through my head. Truth be told, I’m VERY introverted. In person. Online, nope, I can be outgoing, I’m not face-to-face and having a chat with someone is very very easy! Yes, meeting Tara I was a nervous wreck! My husband on the other hand – ha, he gets along with anyone! He’s the extrovert – loves to tease people too (trying to put a stop to that one!) *I* tried not to be too nervous, but…

I don’t know why I was so nervous! Dinner was delicious, Tara was a wonderful hostess, the turkey was awesome – and this was baked by someone who is a vegetarian!

But the most important thing was seeing just how happy the two of them were together! That is what made Thanksgiving so special!

December 2009… Philip and Tara came up to PA the weekend before Christmas to spend Christmas with us in PA! Excited! Especially because Tara got her wish for SNOW! I LOVE these photos… when the kids woke up on Saturday morning – PLAYTIME! The ground was covered, snow was still falling, Tara was in flipflops – *laughing* – and the kids went out and snowball fight time!

DECEMBER 2009

Friday evening of the weekend, we actually had our Christmas & Dinner. My brother and SIL, Dave & Melisa, and the kids (nieces, Courtney & Brooke, and nephew, Sean) came over along with grandparents Nanny & Pappy. This was the first time everyone met Tara, and they couldn’t wait to meet Philip’s girlfriend also! We had a wonderful time, exchanging gifts, hanging out – and playing Pappy’s favorite (ha ha) game – Blitz! Saturday we had planned to take the kids up to Hershey Park and go through their Christmas village and the nighttime light shows, however, due to the snowstorm everything closed down. We still made it over to visit one last time with Nanny and Pappy, stayed there for a little while, of course, played Blitz again! Tara tried in vain to help Nanny with her cell phone – as Tara later said, that phone was hopeless! (what can we say about dinosaur age technology? *laughing*) Sunday then, the kids left to go back to North Carolina but we had a wonderful time, and everyone was happy to meet Philip’s girlfriend! (Little did we all know that in another year we’d be looking at the future Mrs. Philip Buch!)

Enjoy the photos below from Christmas 2009 spent with Philip and Tara!

Blog Writing Moods! - July 23, 2011 by admin

It’s funny – I actually write blogs – 17 in fact – for my “paying job”. So, I thought, it won’t be that hard to keep up with my personal blog.. HA HA HA!

Let me tell you… after writing some 100+ entries weekly (7 days a week), the LAST thing I want to do is come on here and write personal thoughts, happenings, etc! It’s really tough keeping up with your own blog! I give all the credit to those who can and do so! I had these grandiose visions of “oh, I’ll update this daily”, or “I can do this, it’s not that hard”.. bleh, the majority of days, when I’m done writing for work, I get up and get away from the computer, because it seems like this is where I am permanently attached! In fact, I’ve grown roots! Ha!

So… one very important update.. then a few minutes to gather some thoughts, and I’ll post some more updates!

HANGING BUCKET GARDEN

SO BUMMED! We planted too late down here in Tucson, there was no weather in the low to mid-70′s. I think we went directly from 60 to 80, so no matter where we moved our plantings, nothing grew! If you go back to my earlier posts back in April Hanging Bucket Veggie Garden, you’ll see these gorgeous veggie plants, and everything looks honkey-dory, right?

Well.. nope. As soon as it got hot – and remember, no rain either until the monsoons – everything shriveled up!

Except my MANGO TREES! YEAH! I’ve now got 7 beautiful 6 – 12″ Mango Trees growing! I am definitely excited about those! I do go out and talk to the plants too, ha! But, they seem to be doing well, and I’m thrilled about those. Mike and I decided we are going to try the Bucket Garden again, but this time plant in October when it is much cooler and see what happens! Fingers and toes crossed and hope it works this time! I am loving fresh veggies on the grill – but hating the price of them at the grocery stores!
